The Light Grows Gently Stronger

Jesus’ parable in Luke chapter 15 is one of the most beloved stories in the Bible. The father’s unselfishness and love contrasts with the son’s selfishness and rebellion, and it speaks to us at the deepest level of who we are. Why is that? Because it is us! We are all prodigals in some ways in our relationship with God throughout our life, and also in our relationships within our families. We have all gone our own way at times, and separated ourselves from God and each other. The parable that Jesus told has many deep spiritual truths, and is not just the story of the father and his two sons. It’s our story, and the story of everyone who has ever lived. It’s the journey of people coming home to God. The parable cuts to the heart of the matter of who God is, who we are, and how we need to come home. We don’t need another political debate, or religious argument, or divisive relationship. We want to be loved! We want to be forgiven, reconciled and healed.
